How to Promote Fiverr Gigs on Medium

May 6, 2024

If you offer writing services, then you need to promote your Fiverr gigs on Medium. Medium is one site that gets rid of all the demands of other social media networks and replaces it with a simple command: write. Even if you’re not a writer, Medium is a powerful place to spread the word about your gig.

If you’ve searched for anything in the past few years, you know that Medium is everywhere. Half the time, the good stuff is behind an annoying paywall! But did you know that you don’t need to paywall your articles on Medium? Because this is your sign to start using Medium to start driving some juicy organic traffic to your Fiverr gig.

Medium is a great place to promote your Fiverr gig with articles, even if you’re not offering writing services. Below is a basic promotional strategy for getting the most of Medium:

  • Create useful content: Write articles that help people solve problems and show off your expertise. Avoid overly promotional content, because this is a turn-off
  • Optimize for SEO: Improve your discoverability by using keywords that your buyers might look for. Use these naturally in your headlines and paragraphs
  • Chat with the Medium community: Increase your visibility on Medium by commenting on related posts and interacting with other users
  • Include links to your Fiverr gig: Include a call-to-action that links directly to your Fiverr gig at the end of your articles
  • Use tags and publications: Use relevant tags to increase the visibility of your posts and try to get your articles published in niche-related Medium publications to increase your reach
  • Avoid AI-generated content: Medium and its community dislike AI content, so it’s best to do things the old-fashioned way

This Medium strategy is very simple: write good stuff, talk to other people. Fiverr had a Medium publication for a short while – and it’s a great example of how people who aren’t “writers” can still use Medium to showcase their business and expertise.

Why Medium Is a Great Choice for Promoting Fiverr Gigs

Medium was created by Ev Williams, co-founder of Twitter (now X) and the creator of Blogger. Think of it as a long-form version of Twitter where what you say matters. It’s a place to showcase your writing chops without any distractions like a funny cat video that really wants you to watch it.

More importantly, it’s a website with high domain authority – 95! – that makes it easy to direct traffic to your Fiverr gig.

Medium, like Pinterest, is a long-term social media network. Once your article is published and ranks, you will start to reap the benefits of organic SEO – a steady stream of traffic to your Fiverr gig. This is a site that rewards ongoing, slow work and patience. That’s the boring part. The good part is once the work is done, it’s done and it doesn’t disappear into the black hole of old content.

Another plus point for Medium is that you don’t need to constantly engage on the platform for best results, nor do you need to create endless videos and graphics to make your post attractive to readers.

If you can write, then you’re good to go – and you don’t need to be “a writer” to make Medium work for you!

How to Use Medium for Your Fiverr Portfolio

If you’re selling writing services on Fiverr, you may want to use Medium as a portfolio. That’s a great idea! Unfortunately, Fiverr won’t let you do it – you need to use Blogger instead.

This isn’t a big deal, as you can copy and paste your articles into a throwaway Blogger site. I recommend the following order of posting:

  • Write and post your article on your professional website
  • Republish the content to Medium
  • Duplicate the content to Blogger

Medium has a great little import tool that makes this as easy as a few clicks. This strategy ensures that your website gets the canonical link (important for SEO), the visibility of Medium, and the portfolio piece for Fiverr.

Is Medium Only for Writers?

While Medium is a great choice for writers promoting their Fiverr gigs, you can still benefit if you’re not selling writing writing services. Medium has great SEO built in, so you can write and share useful articles that help people in your niche and build credibility as an expert – and of course, drive traffic to your Fiverr gig.

If you’re struggling on ideas for what to write, just Google your service and niche – you’ll find plenty of inspiration in blogs and even videos!

Don’t Use AI to Write, and Don’t Spam!

I write on Medium often, and many of my posts are in the Fiverr niche. One thing I’ve noticed is that most of the articles are written by AI – and badly. These articles are typically created just for affiliate links, but sometimes just a seller advertising their service.

Please don’t do this.

Medium does not like AI content. I’ll get into that in more detail below, but for now, know that the platform, its writers, or its readers like AI spam content – and that Google is at war with AI spam. It got so bad that in May 2024, Medium simply banned AI content from its partner program.

If you want to make Medium work for you, you need to write. This is the only way you will get real followers and also have a chance to get the Medium Boost, which is essentially where Medium pushes your story to go viral on the platform. This is a unique feature since articles that get the boost are curated by people.

You can still use AI writing. You just won’t be able to paywall the writing behind the Medium Partner Program. You also won’t be eligible for boosting and may earn the disdain of other writers. It’s up to you.

This article is paywalled, but that doesn’t stop it getting this search position (and yes, I agree, annoying)

Since Medium already does most of the SEO for you, all you really need to do is focus on optimizing your content for SEO and publications.

  • Choose the right keywords
  • Write a GOOD headline
  • Include relevant links
  • Pick topics carefully
  • Join publications

Use Relevant Keywords

You’ll want to use a keyword tool for this and find search terms that your buyers are looking for. I recommend looking for informational keywords. These are keywords where people are looking for information about something. Make sure you pick keywords that have a monthly traffic of at least 100 (ideally more)!

Your goal here is to showcase your expertise and get your Medium article ranked on Google so you can be found and ultimately, drive traffic to Fiverr to buy your gig. It’s OK to promote your gig at the end of an article – just make sure that your article answers the question as well.

Write a Good Headline

Nobody clicks on bad headlines. You’ll need to incorporate your keyword into the headline, but after that, focus on getting people’s attention. One of my favorite free tools for writing headlines on Medium is AIOSEO’s headline checker, which lets you quickly run through versions of your headline until you get a good score.

Link to Resources and Your Fiverr Gig

Your articles should be authoritative and link to sources. Unlike many other social media sites, it’s also OK to link to your Fiverr gig – but to get best results, you need to offer value!

The easiest way to do this is to give away a few secrets that show people you’re an expert, then add a call to action at the bottom of the article to hire you. This kind of article gives people the information they need to do something – and the choice to hire an expert who can do it faster and better.

When you’re marketing on social media, promoting your Fiverr gig is not your priority: sharing informational content is. This may seem counterintuitive at first, but this strategy is a far more powerful one for self-promotion.

People don’t want to read spam, but they do want to read stuff that helps them. The more content you have that shows your expertise, the more leads you can attract

Choose 5 Tags for Your Article

The Fiverr topic on Medium isn’t a good choice for promoting your Fiverr gigs

Tags are Medium’s version of hashtags that link you back to topic pages. You can add up to 5 on each story you publish. Medium has a Fiverr tag, which primarily features stories for freelancers. This tag also has a low following due to spam posts. Your buyers will not be following this hashtag.

Instead, choose tags that are relevant to your topic. For writers, this is as simple as writing articles in your gig’s niche. If you write articles for dog blogs, you can write articles about dog training and breeds of dog and then use tags to appear on relevant topic pages, like “dog training”.

Make sure your tag matches your content. Tags should be used wisely, but they’re not the most important thing for your article visibility on Medium, especially when you’re just starting out.

Find and Join Publications

Publications are Medium’s version of magazines. You can even make your own – I’ve made two! Publications aren’t necessary for promoting your Fiverr gig, but getting published in a niche-related publication can give you a lot more eyeballs than if you self-publish. As a new author on Medium, you won’t have any followers – but established publications do.

Getting into publications can be tricky. They usually have their own submission processes, editorial guidelines, and editors who will vet and approve you before you can submit your work – and your work won’t be published unless approved.

Some publications are strict, while others are more relaxed. The good news is that there are plenty of publications for newbies and – in my opinion – it isn’t difficult to get approved as an author on Medium publications. Finding the right publication is the most time-consuming part – one good starting point is Medium’s mega-list of publications.

Should You Join the Medium Partner Program?

That depends on your goals. First thing to know is that the Medium Partner Program is the reason why so many articles on Medium are paywalled.

The Medium Partner Program is a payshare program where members pay $5 a month,or $50 a year to get paid for article reads from other members who are also in the program (hence the annoying paywall). Not a lot at first, but it can add up, especially as your audience grows.

This isn’t essential at all. If you only want to get a few articles competing for specific keywords, you don’t need this. I am a member of this program and so far, I’m making all my money back. I could definitely be making more if I posted more consistently – but between this blog, my work, and other projects, it’s hard to find the time!

Since your goal is to promote your gigs on Fiverr, you don’t need to join. If you’re a writer and you want to start gaining traction and followers away from Fiverr, definitely consider it. You can never have too many income sources! If your Medium takes off, you can make thousands of dollars a month.

Medium Is Easy to Monetize

Medium can be monetized in other ways. This article shows you how to do one of them: driving traffic to your Fiverr gigs with articles. But you don’t only need to send traffic to Fiverr.

You can also…

  • Create a newsletter
  • Use affiliate links
  • Send people to offers

Anything you can monetize on a blog, you can monetize on Medium. There are no special tactics here – just what I’m telling you to do. All you need is for people to read your stories and click your links.

The biggest difference between your blog and Medium is that Medium is a much quicker way to get good rankings on Google, especially if your blog is new. Medium is also less vulnerable to Google’s periodic updates (for now…)

One smart way to use Medium is to build an audience there, funnel it to your website, and then onto Fiverr or wherever else. Whenever you use social media to promote your Fiverr gig, always consider your business away from Fiverr and include it in your strategy – this will give you much better long-term stability.

TL;DR: Everyone Should Promote Fiverr Gigs on Medium

Medium is a simple, powerful platform and a great choice for Fiverr gig promotion. As with all social media, you should be focusing on delivering value rather than just promoting. Give people what they want and get what you want!

Unlike many social media platforms, Medium also gives you SEO benefits: write an optimized article, and there’s a good chance you will rank for your chosen keyword on the first page of Google. This is important, because Medium’s high domain authority means that your article will be visible in Google search results long after you’ve written it. Medium is a very passive form of Fiverr gig marketing after the initial slog (or joy!) of writing your article.

If you’re not a writer – or very bad at writing – don’t use AI. Hire a writer with experience in SEO to help you instead. If you must use an AI writer, take care to edit the results and make them less “AI”. Medium is a platform for writers – and many writers are unhappy with AI writing damaging their industry.

Take the time to engage with the community in your niche. Like all other social platforms, this will help you to grow faster, get noticed, and get more effective results. This isn’t as necessary as it is on other platforms, but the rewards of engaging can go far beyond just selling a gig, since you can monetize your Medium in several ways with a large audience.
